How We Built the Brand Behind Australia's First ASX-Listed Family Law Firm

From a single Melbourne office with no brand and no market presence to Australia's first-ever ASX-listed specialist family law firm.

Client snapshot: Australian Family Lawyers (now AF Legal Group, ASX-listed) — founded 2015, launched from a single small Melbourne office with no brand, no market presence, and a founder betting the firm on marketing rather than the old-boys' referral network.

The Challenge

Family law is one of the hardest categories in Australian legal marketing. Emotionally charged, trust-dependent, ferociously competitive, and dominated by decades-old firms with entrenched referral networks. Into that walked a brand-new practice: one modest Melbourne office, zero name recognition, and a founder who'd made a contrarian bet that a family law firm could be built on brand and digital demand rather than relationships alone.

That bet only works if the firm looks credible on day one. People choosing a family lawyer are in the worst moment of their lives. They don't shop on price, they shop on whether they can trust you with their children and their house. A startup firm has none of the usual proof: no history, no reputation, no referrers vouching for it. Everything has to be carried by the brand itself.

The Strategy

We were the firm's launch partner. Before there was a market presence, there was a positioning problem to solve, and we solved it end to end.

Strategy first. We defined who the firm was for, what it stood for, and how it would differentiate in a category where every competitor says the same three things. That positioning became the brief for everything that followed.

A brand engineered for trust, not applause. Name treatment, logo, visual identity, tone of voice, and the full brand system, built to make a brand-new firm feel established and safe to call. In family law, credibility is the conversion lever.

The website as the firm's front door. We designed and built the site as a conversion asset, not a brochure: clear practice-area architecture, messaging that spoke to the fear and uncertainty behind the search, and enquiry paths built for people who are anxious and ready to act.

Collateral that held the line. Print, stationery, pitch and client-facing materials, so the brand stayed consistent from a Google result to a first consultation to the boardroom.

We didn't run the firm's paid advertising. That sat with a specialist performance agency. What we built was the thing their spend landed on: the brand, the site, and the market positioning that made every dollar of media convert instead of bounce.

The Results

The takeaway

Anyone can buy traffic. Very few can build the reason it converts. Take a single-office startup in the most trust-sensitive corner of law, give it a brand that reads as established from day one, and put it on a platform that turns anxious searchers into consultations, that's not a campaign. That's a company being given something to grow into.

We don't do vanity marketing. We build the brand, the positioning and the platform that turn firms into market leaders.
